Asterix in Spain: Latin Jokes Explained

    Not 100% exact - you're right for the most part, but it's not just spectacle. He was saying as long as the people are kept relatively sufficiently fed, as well as entertained, they won't cause trouble.

  2. You're right! It's curious, but I didn't think of that. Of course the bread is an important part of the equation! Somehow I only ever gave weight to the circuses bit.
